America Ferrera is known to rock a bold lip, but she just proved she looks just as amazing in a much more low-key shade: beige. At last night’s National Board of Review Gala, simple, glowing makeup and glossy curls made the actress shine even more than usual. Am I right or am I right?

Makeup artist Linda Hay says she was inspired by America’s vintage Valentino dress, opting for the equally classic combination of a smoky eye and beige lip. “It was a fresh complement to the sophisticated little black dress,” she says. Here’s a breakdown of the exact products she used to get the look.

1. For the face: “I kept the skin very sheer, using Kevyn Aucoin Candlelight to add radiance. I also used Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate for a bit of contour. I added a splash of blush on the apples of the cheeks using Armani Blush #506.”

2. For the eyes: “I used black Charlotte Tilbury Eye Pencil to line the top lid and inside the water line on the bottom, blending the pencil using the darkest shade from the YSL Palette #4. I then used the mid-tone shades of the palette to blend up and away. I also used the highlighter shade just under the brow and inside corner of the eye. Under the eye, I applied a soft line of the medium shade, followed by heavy layers of L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara.”

3. For the lips: “I finished with a nude lip to contrast the eye, using NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Buenos Aires.”

Meanwhile, those deliciously shiny curls. Hairstylist Leonardo Manetti created what he calls “classic curled waves” by starting with two texture-building products: Oribe Foundation Mist and Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray. He blew out the hair, then separated it into sections—two in front, two on the sides, and two in the back. Then, he curled each section using a one-inch curling iron. “To set, I used a bit of Oribe Impermeable Spray,” he says. “I then brushed out the curls into my desired shape and finished with Oribe Superfine Hairspray.”
