Readers, meet Charlotte Tilbury. She’s the London-born, Ibiza-raised celebrity makeup artist who has not only worked with everyone from Kate Moss to Rihanna to Kim Kardashian but is totally changing the game with her innovative makeup line (which is separated into foolproof looks—genius!). When it first launched in the U.K., products from the line started popping up in just about every major makeup artist’s bag, and now that its available in the States, it’ll probably find its way into yours too. Oh, and she’ll be guest-editing Lipstick for us for the month of October, so she’ll be around here sharing tips, giving us how-tos, taking over our Get_Lipstick Instagram account, and more! But, first, here’s a little getting-to-know-you Q&A to get you acquainted:

Lipstick: Tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started in the industry.
CT: I discovered makeup when I was 13, and it changed my life. I started wearing mascara, and overnight, people reacted to me in a very different way—I was more popular and I felt more confident. While at first it seemed like a depressing realization, I soon realized that makeup is powerful—it’s every woman’s secret weapon. Makeup can give you the confidence to…change your job, move abroad, get a pay raise. Ever since that epiphany moment, no one has ever seen me without makeup on! I definitely wouldn’t have the life and career I have without it.

I started in the industry by assisting [famed celebrity makeup artist] Mary Greenwell. I met her in Ibiza and begged to become her assistant. I remember being backstage at a runway show for the first time with Mary, and every single supermodel was in a room: Claudia, Christy, Naomi, Cindy, Stephanie, Linda, and Helena. It was an incredible time to start!

Lipstick: Congrats on your makeup line! What made you take the plunge and create it?
CT: My range is something I really believe in. Throughout my 20 years as a makeup artist and through the product development I have done for many high-end brands (such as Helena Rubenstein, MAC, Armani, MyFace) I have always strived to find the perfect product. Even though I worked with the best VIP formulas before they come to market, I always wanted more—perfection. I never found a foundation that I fell in love with (I used concealers mixed with creams); I was always looking for the Holy Grail of mascaras, and I have been mixing my own Magic Cream for the past 20 years.

What really drives me is sharing the power of makeup with every woman. Beauty is not an exclusive club—there are no unattractive women, just some that don’t know understand the power of makeup. I was shocked to find out that only 50 percent of women do not engage with makeup and the reasons are: They don’t know how to use it, they don’t know what suits them, they don’t have the time. My brand is all about easy-to-choose, easy-to-use products, makeup made easy. I’m practically taking myself out of a job! You can simply choose one of my 10 iconic looks and go. It’s so easy, even a man could shop it!

Lipstick: How do you think growing up in Ibiza has informed your vision of beauty?
CT: My father is a painter in Ibiza, where I grew up, and [both Ibiza and art] have had a huge influence on my interest in colors, tonality, and contrasts. I was surrounded by artists, writers, musicians, and actors. I knew that I would do something creative. The light, colors, and energy of Ibiza are still constant sources of inspirations for my work. I always leave Ibiza recharged and full of ideas for new shades, looks, and products.

Lipstick: You’ve said mascara was the first product you connected to, and you’ve stayed passionate about it throughout the years. What exactly did you want to find in your own mascara that you hadn’t up until then?
CT: For years I’ve been searching for The One. I used to cocktail up to five mascaras to create the effect I desired: curl, volume, length, separation, and drama. So I wanted to create a must-have mascara, better than anything I could already buy in the market. I was looking for false lashes in a bottle and found most formulas clogging, or lacking in volume. A good mascara can shape and elongate your eyes, and I wanted to simplify application at the same time with an easy-to-use, multipurpose brush. I experimented with a huge amount of brushes and formulations for a couple of years, testing everything on my own very fair lashes! Nothing seemed to give me the all-important one-coat impact with the flutter I was searching for…I went through hundreds of mascaras over that period of time! In the end, we had my perfect brush specially designed and laser-cut—it has five grooves and is shaped like a Christmas tree to grab even the smallest of lashes and turn them into full, fluttering Bambi lashes. [Ed note: You can pick one up here.]

Lipstick: What is the one thing a woman can do to instantly look sexier before a date?
CT: Red lipstick is instant glamour. Always line the lips with a lip pencil to perfect and enhance the shape, then fill in color with a square-tipped lip brush for precision. K.I.S.S.I.N.G in So Marilyn is a universally flattering red shade for Hollywood-style wow-factor. Finish with a slick of lip gloss for 3-D volume.

Lipstick: If you weren’t a makeup artist, what would you be?
CT: I would be an artist!

You love her already, don’t you? Obviously yes. Well, there’s more tips coming tomorrow, so make sure to check back and say hello!
