Ever since we found last week that the theme of this year’s Met Gala was “China: Through the Looking Glass,” we’ve been curious to see how the stars and their glam squads would interpret it. The answer? Buns, hair accessories featuring large—and sometimes dangly—elements, and dark, intense lipstick. Oh, and Katie Holmes brought back her bob for the occasion. The common thread through these fashion-forward interpretations of the Asian aesthetic? Bold, eye-catching beauty moments that hit with power.

First, the big news: Holmes teased a big haircut moment earlier in the day on Instagram and then showed up on the carpet with this blunt-cut bob (a wig styled by DJ Quintero using products from Alterna, the hair care company Holmes co-owns):

Also in the hair category, Jennifer Lawrence edged up her bun with some visible hairpins (and a lot of bronzer—Diorskin Nude Air Tan Healthy Glow Sun Powder— in the makeup department):

Renato Campora for Moroccanoil helped Selena Gomez go full-on floral with cascading orchids:

While Rihanna chose a gilded headpiece that echoed the embroidery on her dress:

But no one could outdo Sarah Jessica Parker in the headpiece department. She wore an epically large ornamental Philip Treacy topper that makes you wonder how strong her neck muscles must be:

As for makeup, there were more than a couple cat-eye looks on the carpet, but the major story of the night was rich, deeply pigmented lipstick. Take for example Claire Danes’ black-cherry pout:

And Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s lovely dark lip:

Lily Aldridge also went dark, with almost-black lips that struck a gorgeous contrast with her very highlighted skin:
