Aside from the obvious fact that Jennifer Lopez’s complexion does not follow the rules of time and aging, we can’t get over how good her face has looked lately—especially her sharp-as-hell cheekbones, which made an appearance in an Instagram video this week. Even though some of us might have serious contouring fatigue (really, contouring using kitchen knives?!) it’s tough not to dream about having that kind of bone structure. But just in case we don’t wake up with those cheekbones when we turn 46—and because YOLO—we went to her longtime makeup artist Mary Phillips to find out exactly how to cop hers.

If your cheekbones are visible in a blurry Instagram video, you know you’re doing something right. What is J.Lo doing? Rubbing unicorn tears on her skin? Sort of—it’s all about the liquid formulas. “I get a lot out of liquids and only add powders on the areas that tend to get shiny,” says Phillips. The liquid in question is L’Oréal True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator ($13,, which gives skin that soft, candlelit glow. Then Phillips adds powder blush and powder bronzer (Giorgio Armani Cheek Fabric Blush ($48, and YSL Les Sahariennes Bronzing Stones in Sunstone ($55, to be exact) to sculpt and define the cheekbones—and follows with her secret weapon for a seamless, dewy finish. “I put a cream moisturizer on a blush brush and ‘wand’ it over skin after I’ve applied powder,” she explains. “It helps the makeup sink into skin so it looks like skin—instead of sitting on top of the face and looking like makeup.”

It’s also key to have a very light hand with the products, says Phillips. Even if it takes a lot of products, it should never, ever look that way. “Part of the art of it is using 12 products and making it look like you’ve used four,” she adds. It’s ten times easier to add more as needed than it is to go back a step if you’ve gone a little overboard.
