It’s pretty much the last thing we’d expect to see on Instagram, ever: a bikini shot from Anne Hathaway. Let alone one posted in the dead of winter when she’s very pregnant. But this exact thing just happened (see photo below), and you’re going to love the explanation behind it.

While Hathaway was enjoying the beach on vacation yesterday, she realized paparazzi were taking photos of her in her bathing suit. We’d probably have a meltdown if we discovered that a telephoto lens had been trained on our unposed thighs, even on our most confident bathing-suit body day. The fact that the actress is pregnant makes the violation even more unsettling; carrying a child may make you celebrate your body in a newfound way, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you want to bare your changing shape to the world. Instead of freaking out, though, Hathaway decided to seize the moment and make it into something profoundly beautiful by stealing it back from those who were invading her privacy (and let’s face it, hoping to capture the most unflattering shots of her possible, in order to make big bucks selling them to tabloids).

Here’s how Hathaway put it in the post’s caption: “Happy 2016 to my beautiful Instafriends! So, posting a bikini pic is a little out of character for me, but just now while I was at the beach I noticed I was being photographed. I figure if this kind of photo is going to be out in the world it should at least be an image that makes me happy (and be one that was taken with my consent. And with a filter 🙂 Wishing you love, light and blessings for the year ahead!”

There’s so much to admire here, from the fact that Hathaway was confident enough to put this private and revealing image out there to make such a powerful statement, to the way she was honest about the fact that of course she used a filter to make it as flattering as possible. We recently vowed to stop clicking on stories about celebrities’ post-baby bodies as a way to help end the stalking of new moms by photographers; wouldn’t the world be a nicer place if we stopped looking at paparazzi shots of people nearly naked at the beach, too? Getting a reassuring glimpse of cellulite or stretch marks—yes, famous people have those too!—just isn’t worth feeding the photos-at-any-cost monster that the 24/7 celeb news cycle has spawned.

Meanwhile, Hathaway’s impromptu beach photo shines light on the other end of the spectrum: how glorious an image of a pregnant body is when it’s taken with love. We’re so grateful that she chose to share it with us.
